Position Summary

Associated Hardwoods, Inc. is seeking an experienced Boiler Operator to oversee the efficient and safe operation of our high-pressure boiler system. This skilled position requires expertise in boiler maintenance, troubleshooting, and fuel system management, as well as a strong understanding of industrial safety protocols. The ideal candidate will have experience operating biomass-fueled boiler systems, specifically those burning wood shavings and other lumber byproducts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Boiler Operation:
    • Monitor and operate high-pressure boilers to ensure proper function and efficient fuel combustion.
    • Maintain appropriate steam pressure and water levels to meet facility demands.
    • Adjust airflow, fuel feed rates, and combustion settings to optimize efficiency.
  • System Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
    • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and repairs on boiler systems, pumps, and related components.
    • Diagnose and correct system malfunctions, leaks, and pressure irregularities.
    • Clear stoppages caused by dust accumulation or foreign material in the fuel feed system.
  • Material Handling & Fuel Management:
    • Oversee the processing and supply of biomass fuel (wood shavings, sawdust, and waste materials).
    • Operate grinders, conveyors, and front-end loaders to ensure consistent fuel supply.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Adhere to OSHA safety regulations and company protocols for boiler operation.
    • Conduct daily equipment inspections and log performance data.
    • Respond promptly to alarms, system failures, or emergency shutdowns.
  • Record-Keeping & Reporting:
    • Maintain detailed logs of pressure readings, maintenance activities, and fuel usage.
    • Report operational concerns or needed repairs to the Maintenance Manager.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education & Certification:
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Boiler Operator License or Certification (preferred but not required).
    • Technical training in boiler operation, thermodynamics, or mechanical systems (preferred).
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 3 years of experience operating and maintaining industrial boiler systems.
    • Experience with biomass or wood-fired boilers preferred.
    • Familiarity with pumps, steam systems, and industrial ventilation.
  • Technical & Safety Knowledge:
    • Strong understanding of steam systems, combustion control, and water chemistry.
    • Ability to read and interpret pressure gauges, schematics, and technical manuals.
    • Knowledge of fire prevention, hazardous material handling, and emergency shutdown procedures.
  • Soft Skills & Work Ethic:
    • Ability to work independently during overnight shifts with minimal supervision.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
    • Reliable and punctual, with a strong commitment to workplace safety.

Working Conditions

  • Shift Work: Requires flexibility to work overnights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Environment: Work near high-heat equipment, with exposure to steam, dust, noise, and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Protective Equipment: Use of PPE (hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and respirators) as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted; heavier loads with assistance.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.
  • Climb ladders and staircases, sometimes at significant heights.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and crouch to inspect or service equipment.
  • Push and pull to operate valves, open hatches, or remove debris.
  • Perform repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements.
  • Maintain adequate vision and hearing to monitor operations and respond to alarms.
  • Work in high-temperature environments near active boiler units.
