Job Title: Layer Maker

Position Summary

Associated Hardwoods, Inc. is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Layer Maker to support operations in the Packdown plant. This position is responsible for accurately stacking and preparing lumber layers to ensure efficiency in the production process. The ideal candidate will have experience in a fast-paced industrial setting, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work safely while handling lumber materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lumber Layering & Stacking:
    • Manually arrange and stack lumber pieces according to size and quality specifications.
    • Ensure proper alignment and positioning of layers to facilitate smooth processing.
    • Inspect lumber for defects and remove or report any non-conforming pieces.
  • Material Handling & Organization:
    • Operate material-handling equipment as necessary to transport lumber safely.
    • Keep the work area clean and organized to maintain efficient workflow.
    • Assist in inventory management by tracking material usage and reporting shortages.
  • Safety & Compliance:
    • Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety protocols when handling lumber.
    • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure safe stacking practices.
    • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards to the Lumber Yard Manager.
  • Operational Support:
    • Collaborate with other team members to meet production goals and deadlines.
    • Assist in machine operation or adjustments as directed by supervisors.
    • Participate in training sessions to improve knowledge of lumber grading and handling procedures.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education & Experience:
    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
    • Previous experience in lumber handling, manufacturing, or a related industry is a plus.
  • Technical & Physical Skills:
    • Ability to recognize different lumber grades and dimensions.
    • Basic mechanical aptitude to operate material-handling equipment safely.
    • Strong physical stamina to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy lumber pieces regularly.
  • Soft Skills & Work Ethic:
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in stacking and layering.
    • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
    • Reliable, punctual, and committed to workplace safety and team collaboration.

Working Conditions

  • Shift Work: May require flexible scheduling, including early mornings or overtime as needed.
  • Environment: Work is conducted in a lumber processing facility with exposure to wood dust, noise, and varying temperatures.
  • Protective Equipment: Use of PPE (gloves, hearing protection, safety glasses and vests, etc.) is required.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting and Carrying: Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Standing and Walking: Prolonged periods of standing and moving across the plant.
  • Repetitive Motion: Continuous use of hands and arms for stacking and lifting lumber.
  • Bending and Stooping: Regularly bend, stoop, and kneel to arrange materials.

Typical Schedule

  • Monday – Thursday: 6:00 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Friday: 6:00 AM – 10:00 AM
  • Schedule may adjust based on business needs.
